The Shawinigan Cataractes have won their first ever President’s Cup in the history of the franchise. The award is presented annually to the winner of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
On Saturday, the Cataractes beat the Charlottetown Islanders 4-3 in overtime to win the best out of seven series four games to one in the fifth game of the series. The Cataractes’ overtime winner came from Pierrick Dube of Sept-Iles, Quebec. For Dube, it was his second goal of the game as he tied the contest at three goals apiece at 10:38 of the third period. The Islanders actually had a 3-1 lead in the second period, before the Cataractes responded with three unanswered goals.
In a bizarre statistic, the Cataractes won the series four games to one even though the Islanders and Cataractes shared the same number of goals in the series with 18 each. That is because in the Islanders’s lone win in the series in game four, Charlottetown came through with a dominant 7-0 win.
The Cataractes are the second team to qualify for the 2022 Memorial Cup at the Toronto Dominion Station in Saint John, New Brunswick, which starts June 20. They will be joined by the host, Saint John Sea Dogs.
Two more teams will be joining the Cataractes and Sea Dogs. In the Western Hockey League Final, the Edmonton Oil Kings lead the Seattle Thunderbirds three games to two. In the Ontario Hockey League Final, the Hamilton Bulldogs and Windsor Spitfires are tied at two games apiece.
