
It was quite the weekend for Sarah Mitton of Liverpool, Nova Scotia and Canadian Olympic bronze medallist Evan Dunfee of Richmond, British Columbia. Mitton won her second consecutive gold medal in the women’s shot put at the 2025 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China and Dunfee set the world record in the men’s 35 kilometre walk in an event in Slovakia.
Mitton had a throw of 20.48 metres. Jessica Schilder of the Netherlands won the silver medal with a throw of 20.07 metres. Chase Jackson of the United States won the bronze medal with a throw of 20.06 metres. Mitton reached the podium by 1.2 metres. Fanny Roos of Sweden finished in fourth place with a throw of 19.28 metres. Mitton was the only Canadian medalist at the 2025 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China. When Mitton won the gold medal at the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, she had a winning throw of 20.22 metres.
Meanwhile, Dunfee’s world record time was 2:21.40 at the World Athletics Race Walking Tour Gold Meeting in Dundice, Slovakia. The previous world record was set by Masatora Kawano, who had a time of 2:21.47 at the 2024 All-Japan Race Walking Championships. Dunfee won a bronze medal for Canada in the men’s 50 kilometre walk at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021.
