According to Matt Geagan of CBS Boston on Friday, the Boston Red Sox are bringing back starting pitcher James Paxton of Ladner, British Columbia. The Red Sox made a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers as the Dodgers will receive minor league infielder Moises Bolivar in return.
Nicknamed “The Big Maple”, Paxton pitched in 18 games for the Dodgers this season and had a record of eight wins and two losses with an earned run average of 4.43. In 89 1/3 innings, he gave up 82 hits, 44 earned runs, 11 home runs and 48 walks, to go along with 64 strikeouts and a WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) of 1.46. Despite the strong win/loss record this season in Los Angeles, Paxton had a very high WHIP and led the National League in walks.
This was Paxton’s second time with the Red Sox. He was previously with them in 2023. Last season Paxton had a record of seven wins and five losses with an earned run average of 4.50. In 19 games and 96 innings pitched, Paxton gave up 93 hits, 48 earned runs, 18 home runs and 33 walks, to go along with 101 strikeouts and a WHIP of 1.31. In addition to the Red Sox and Dodgers, Paxton has played seven seasons with the Seattle Mariners and two seasons with the New York Yankees.
