Quebec Remparts win 2023 Memorial Cup

The Quebec Remparts won the 2023 Memorial Cup in Kamloops, British Columbia on Sunday. For the Remparts, it was their third Memorial Cup in franchise history as they previously won in 1971 in Quebec City, Quebec, and in 2006 in Moncton, New Brunswick.

On Sunday’s championship final, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League champion Remparts beat the Western Hockey League champion Seattle Thunderbirds 5-0. William Rousseau of Trois-Rivieres, Quebec made 32 saves for the shutout. He made 10 saves in the first period, 11 saves in the second period, and 11 saves in the third period.

Offensively, the Remparts got goals from right winger James Malatesta of Kirkland, Quebec (fifth round draft pick, 133rd overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2021), left winger Kassim Gaudet of Victoriaville, Quebec, center Zachary Bolduc of Trois-Rivieres (first round draft pick, 17th overall by the St. Louis Blues in 2021), left winger Charles Savoie of Saint-Eustache, Quebec and defenseman and Buffalo Sabres prospect Vsevolod Komarov.

Four Remparts players had a multi-point game. Bolduc, Gaudet, and Komarov had one goal and one assist. Meanwhile, captain and centre Theo Rochette of Donnaconna, Quebec had two assists.

The 2023 Canadian Hockey League Awards were also presented on the weekend. Regina Pats Connor Bedard of North Vancouver, British Columbia was named the David Branch CHL Player of the Year.  Anaheim Ducks prospect Olen Zellweger of Calgary, Alberta, who played this past year with the Kamloops Blazers, was the top defenceman. Right Winger Maxim Masse of Rimouski, Quebec, who played this past year with the Chicoutimi Sagueneens, was the top rookie. Nathan Darveau of Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, who played this past year with the Victoriaville Tigres, was the top goaltender. Dave Cameron of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, who was with the Ottawa 67’s, was the top coach.
