Penny Oleksiak and Kylie Masse win gold at 2019 FINA Champions Swim Series in Indianapolis

Canadian Olympic gold medalist Penny Oleksiak of Toronto, Ontario and Canadian Olympic bronze medalist Kylie Masse of LaSalle, Ontario each won gold at the FINA Champions Swim Series in Indianapolis, Indiana this past weekend. Oleksiak won gold in the women’s 200 metre freestyle and Masse won gold in the women’s 100 metre backstroke on Saturday.

Oleksiak also won a bronze medal in the women’s 100 metre butterfly on Friday. Masse also won bronze in the women’s 200 metre backstroke on Friday and Sydney Pickrem of Halifax, Nova Scotia won the silver medal in the women’s 200 metre individual medley on Saturday.

In the women’s 200 metre freestyle, Oleksiak had a winning time of 1:57.18. Leah Smith of the United States won the silver medal with a time of 1:57.84. Sarah Sjoestroem of Sweden won the bronze medal with a time of 1:57.92. Oleksiak reached the podium by 1.67 seconds over Melanie Margalis of the United States, who finished in fourth place with a time of 1:58.85.

In the women’s 100 metre backstroke, Masse had a winning time of 59.13 seconds. Margherita Panziera of Italy won the silver medal with a time of 59.45 seconds. Anastasiia Fesikova of Russia won the bronze medal with a time of one minute and 68 seconds. Masse reached the podium by 1.82 seconds over Katinka Hosszu of Hungary, who finished in fourth place with a time of one minute and 95 seconds.

In the women’s 100 metre butterfly, Oleksiak had a third place time of 58.44 seconds. Sjoestroem won the gold medal with a time of 56.42 seconds. Kelsi Dahlia of the United States won silver with a time of 57.55 seconds. Oleksiak reached the podium by 0.23 seconds over Farida Osman of Egypt, who was in fourth place with a time of 58.67 seconds.

In the women’s 200 metre backstroke, Masse had a third place time of two minutes, 7.59 seconds. Panziera won the gold medal with a time of two minutes, 6.64 seconds. Hosszu won the silver medal with a time of two minutes, 6.94 seconds. Masse reached the podium by 4.82 seconds over Feskiova, who was in fourth place with a time of 2:12.41.

In the women’s 200 metre medley, Pickrem had a second place time of 2:08.61. Hosszu won gold with a time of 2:08.5. Melanie Margalis of the United States won the bronze medal with a time of 2:10.41. Pickrem reached the podium by 4.7 seconds over Hali Flickinger of the United States, who had a fourth place time of 2:13.31.

At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Oleksiak won four Olympic medals and Masse won one Olympic medal. Oleksiak won gold in the women’s 100 metre freestyle, silver in the women’s 100 metre butterfly, and bronze in the women’s 4×100 metre freestyle and women’s 4×200 metre freestyle. Masse won bronze in the women’s 100 metre backstroke. The medals for Oleksiak, Masse and Pickrem will give them confidence as they prepare for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
