Ontario wins gold in male hockey at 2023 Canada Winter Games

In a remarkable display of goaltending on both sides, Ontario defeated Saskatchewan 3-2 in the gold medal game in male hockey at the 2023 Canada Winter Games in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. The bottom line is that Jack Ivankovic of Mississauga, Ontario and Logan Edmonstone of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan were beyond excellent and deserve high praise for their athletic excellence on Saturday. The overtime winner went to Matthew Schaefer of Hamilton, Ontario, who scored at 7:59 of the second extra period. Saskatchewan went up 2-0 after two first period goals before Ontario tied the game with two third period goals. Quebec won the bronze medal by beating British Columbia 7-3.

With the gold medal in male hockey,. Ontario sits third in the overall medal standings with 45 medals (11 gold medals, 18 silver medals and 16 bronze medals). The multiple gold medalists for Ontario so far have been Jessie Xu of Oakville, Ontario (female doubles table tennis, female singles table tennis, female team table tennis), Demi Cai of North York, Ontario (female doubles table tennis and female team table tennis), Xavier Olasz of Kingston, Ontario (male gymnastics team event and male gymnastics all around event), and Jenna Sartoretto of Georgetown, Ontario (female artistic gymnastics team event and artistic gymnastics female balance beam).  Quebec still leads the overall medal standings with 78 medals (31 gold medals, 25 silver medals and 22 bronze medals).
