NHL defenseman Jordie Benn retires at age 37

According to Scott Maxwell of the Daily Faceoff on Tuesday, former National Hockey League defenseman Jordie Benn of Victoria, British Columbia retired at the age of 37. Benn played a dozen seasons in the NHL. He was with the Dallas Stars from 2011 to 2017, the Montreal Canadiens from 2017 to 2019, the Vancouver Canucks from 2019 to 2021, the Winnipeg Jets in 2021, the Minnesota Wild from 2021 to 2022, and the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2022 to 2023. This past season Benn played professional hockey in Sweden, with Brynas IF.

Benn has the distinction of playing for four Canadian NHL teams. The player who has played for the most Canadian teams was defenseman Michel Petit of St-Malo, Quebec, who played with the Vancouver Canucks, Quebec Nordiques, Toronto Maple Leafs, Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers from 1982 to 1997.

In 607 NHL games, Benn had 26 goals and 111 assists for 137 points. He was a +19 with 244 penalty minutes, eight power-play points, six game-winning goals, four shorthanded points, 671 shots on goal, one faceoff win, 977 blocked shots, 751 hits, 132 takeaways, and 402 giveaways. Benn’s faceoff win came in a 4-3 Stars win over the Detroit Red Wings on November 7, 2013.

Jordie Benn is the older brother of Canadian Olympic gold medalist Jamie Benn of Victoria. Jamie Benn won a gold medal for Canada at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.  Jamie Benn has had quite the career with the Dallas Stars. He won the 2015 Art Ross Trophy, and was a two-time NHL All-Star in 2012 and 2016.
