Newfoundland wins its first gold medal at the 2023 Canada Winter Games

Newfoundland won its first gold medal at the 2023 Canada Winter Games in Prince Edward Island on Wednesday. In the individual male gymnastics trampoline event, Gleb Evstigneev of Paradise, Newfoundland won gold.

Evstigneev had 54.45 points in capturing the first place position. Etienne Cloutier of Longueuil, Quebec won the silver medal with 53.94 points. Dexter Richard of Fredericton, New Brunswick won the bronze medal with 53.51 points. Evstigneev reached the podium by 0.97 points. Nathan Levasseur of Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec finished in fourth place with a score of 53.48 points.

This was the second medal for Richard. He previously won the gold medal in the synchronized male trampoline event with Eric Davis of Fredericton on Monday. New Brunswick meanwhile won their third medal of the Canada Winter Games on Thursday. Courtney Charlong of Campbellton won the bronze medal in the female 500 metre short track speed skating event. She placed behind gold medalist Emanuelle Leclerc of Lac-au-saumon, Quebec, and silver medalist Kelian Quevillon of Laval, Quebec. Leclerc had a time of 45.833 seconds, Quevillon had a time of 45.87 seconds and Charlong had a time of 47.43 seconds.

As of Thursday, Quebec leads the overall medal standings with 40. They have 15 gold medals, 13 silver medals and 12 bronze medals. Quebec has passed British Columbia, which is in second place with 34 medals.
