Newfoundland and Nova Scotia earn first gold medal at 2022 Canada Summer Games

The provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as Nova Scotia earned their first gold medal at the 2022 Canada Summer Games in Niagara Falls, Ontario on Tuesday. The gold medal for Newfoundland and Labrador came from Chris Weeks of Harbour Grace, who placed first in the men’s 50 metre butterfly  swimming event. The gold medal for Nova Scotia came from Keilen Bellis of Halifax in the men’s 50 metre breaststroke swimming event.

In the men’s 50 metre butterfly, Weeks posted a winning time of 24.53 seconds. Antoine Destang of Toronto, Ontario won the silver medal with a time of 25.35 seconds. Addison Butler of Irricana, Alberta won the bronze medal with a time of 25.54 seconds.

Newfoundland and Labrador has actually won five medals so far, all in swimming. Weeks won a second medal as he finished second in the men’s 100 metre freestyle on Monday. Tom Pelley of Paradise won a silver medal in the men’s 100 metre freestyle Special Olympics Division and a bronze medal in the men’s 100 metre backstroke Special Olympics Division. Newfoundland and Labrador’s other medal came from Nate Luscombe of Grand Falls-Windsor, who won the bronze medal in the men’s 400 metre para freestyle.

In the men’s 50 metre breaststroke, Bellis had a winning time of 30.17 seconds. Brodie Khajuria of Whitby, Ontario won the silver medal with a time of 30.22 seconds. Sinan Onur of Pointe-Claire, Quebec won the bronze medal with a time of 30.23 seconds. This is the only medal for Nova Scotia to date.

New Brunswick has won one medal so far– a silver. That came from Jesse Canney of Durham Bridge, in the men’s 400 metre para freestyle division on Sunday.

Ontario leads the overall medal standings with 29 medals. They are followed by British Columbia (27), Quebec (18), Alberta (16), and Manitoba (eight).
