Mitchell Picton scores game-winning TD as Roughriders beat Elks

Mitchell Picton of Regina, Saskatchewan scored the game-winning touchdown for the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Saturday. Picton had a 28-yard touchdown catch from Roughriders quarterback Cody Fajardo with four minutes and 42 seconds left in the fourth quarter as the Roughriders beat the Edmonton Elks 26-16.

The touchdown at the time put the Roughriders up 21-16, after they were trailing the Elks 16-15. Picton then caught another pass from Fajardo in the end zone for the two-point conversion to make the score 23-16 Saskatchewan. In all, Picton had four catches for 56 yards.

Picton was one of two National players to score a touchdown for a winning team in week two. The other was Calgary Stampeders wide receiver Luther Hakunavanhu, who went to York University. Hakunavanhu had an eight-yard catch from Stampeders quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell in a 33-30 overtime win for Calgary. It was a stunning win for the Stampeders, as they were trailing 24-0 in the second quarter. With the wins, the Stampeders and Roughriders each improve to 2-0.

In other Canadian Football League News, former All-Star defensive end Odell Willis retired at the age of 37 on Thursday. Willis spent 11 seasons in the CFL from 2009 to 2019 with all teams in the West Division– the Stampeders, Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Saskatchewan Roughriders, Edmonton Eskimos, and British Columbia Lions. Willis was an all-star with the Blue Bombers in 2011, and Eskimos in 2014, and won a Grey Cup with Edmonton in 2015. In 191 games, Willis had 263 defensive tackles, 101 sacks, 24 forced fumbles and three interceptions.
