
Toronto Maple Leafs right winger Mitch Marner of Markham, Ontario recorded his third career National Hockey League hat trick on Friday. He accomplished the feat in a 5-2 Maple Leafs win over the Detroit Red Wings.
Marner’s hat trick was a natural one. With the Maple Leafs leading 1-0, he scored three unanswered goals to put Toronto up 4-0. Marner put the Maple Leafs up 2-0 from John Tavares of Mississauga, Ontario and defenseman Philippe Myers of Moncton, New Brunswick at 8:16 of the first period for an all-Canadian goal. That was followed by a game-winning power-play marker with 32 seconds left in the first period from Tavares and William Nylander to put the Maple Leafs up 3-0. Then with three minutes and 37 seconds left in the second period, Marner put the Maple Leafs up 4-0. Max Pacioretty and defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson had the assists.
Marner’s first NHL hat trick came on February 26, 2022 in a 10-7 Maple Leafs win over the Red Wings. Marner scored four goals. He then scored thrice in a 4-3 Maple Leafs win over the Seattle Kraken on November 30, 2023.
This season, Marner has 13 goals and 36 assists for 49 points in 36 games. He is a +1 with eight penalty minutes, 19 power-play points, one shorthanded point, three game-winning goals, 92 shots on goal, two faceoff wins, 18 blocked shots, 18 hits, 29 takeaways, and 51 giveaways. The shorthanded point was a shorthanded goal and came in a 4-1 Maple Leafs win over the Montreal Canadiens on November 9. Marner scored from David Kampf to put the Maple Leafs up 3-0 at 8:24 of the second period.
With the win, the Maple Leafs are tied with the reigning Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers for first place in the Atlantic Division, Both teams have a record of 22 wins, 12 regulation losses and two losses in extra time for 46 points.
