Hockey Canada has named Kori Cheverie of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia as the head coach of the Canadian National Women’s Hockey Team according to TSN on Thursday. Cheverie is the second straight Canadian national women’s hockey team head coach from the Canadian maritime province of Nova Scotia. Troy Ryan of Spryfield, Nova Scotia was the head coach for Team Canada from 2021 to 2026, and led Canada to a gold medal at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing.
At this time, Cheverie is to be the head coach for Canada at the 2026 International Ice Hockey Federation Women’s World Hockey Championship in Herning and Esbjerg, Denmark from November 6-16. Canada is in the same pool as Finland, Sweden, Japan and Denmark. There is a new playoff format this year. In recent years, the top five teams in the world were in a seeding round, and were joined in the quarterfinals with the top three teams in Group B. In 2026, there are two pools of five teams. The top four teams in each pool advance to the quarterfinals, and the champion has to win three consecutive elimination games.
Cheverie had been the head coach of Montreal in the PWHL since 2023. She led the Victoire to a Walter Cup title in 2026.
As a player, Cheverie played six seasons with the Toronto Furies from 2010 to 2016. She also won a gold medal for Canada in women’s hockey at the 2009 Winter Universiade in Harbin, China.
