Meaghan Benfeito wins women’s 10 metre diving platform gold at 2019 Pan American Games

Three-time Canadian Olympic bronze medalist Meaghan Benfeito of Montreal, Quebec won the women’s 10 metre platform diving gold at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru on Saturday. For Benfeito, it was her second career gold medal at the Pan American Games as she also won the gold medal in the women’s 10 metre synchronized diving competition with Roseline Filion of Laval, Quebec at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto.

Benfeito won the gold medal with a score of 375.05 points. Caeli McKay of Calgary, Alberta contributed to a 1-2 Canada finish as she won the silver medal with 365.7 points. Alejandra Orozco Loza of Mexico won the bronze medal with 356.1 points.

Benfeito reached the podium by 18.95 points. Delaney Schnell of the United States finished in fourth place with a score of 354.85 points.

At the Olympic Games, Benfeito won the bronze medal in the women’s 10 metre synchronized diving at the 2012 Olympic Games in London and the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro with Filion each time. Benfeito also won bronze in the women’s 10 metre platform diving competition at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The gold medal at the Pan American Games will give Benfeito confidence as she prepares for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. 

After Saturday, Team Canada has 17 gold medals, 31 silver medals and 19 bronze medals at the 2019 Pan American Games. Their 67 medals is second behind the United States at 111 medals.
