Canada pounds Peru 14-1 in men’s field hockey Olympic qualifying at 2019 Pan American Games

Team Canada trounced Peru on Saturday 14-1 in men’s field hockey at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru.The event is used as a qualifier for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Team Canada maximized on their scoring opportunities as they notched goals on 14 of their 15 shots. Oliver Scholfield of Vancouver, British Columbia led Canada in scoring with three goals. The four Canadian players who notched two goals were captain Scott Tupper, Mark Pearson and James Wallace of Vancouver, British Columbia, and Keegan Pereira of Ajax, Ontario. The three Canadian players who scored once were Gordie Johnston, Iain Smythe of Vancouver, British Columbia and Sukhi Panesar of Surrey, British Columbia.

With the win, Canada improved to a perfect record of three wins and zero losses from Pool B action. They outscored their opponents 23-2.

Now the focus for the Canadian men’s field hockey side will be the sudden death classification round. In Canada’s quarterfinal game, they will face Trinidad and Tobago in the quarterfinals on Monday. The other quarterfinal games have Argentina versus Peru, Cuba versus the United States and Chile versus Mexico. The gold medalist will participate at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.The women’s quarterfinals will take place on Sunday.
