Canada blanks Uruguay 5-0 in Olympic women’s field hockey qualifying at the 2019 Pan American Games

Team Canada has improved to a record of two wins and one loss in women’s field hockey at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. On Friday, Canada blanked Uruguay 5-0 for their second shutout of the tournament to date. They previously prevented Cuba from scoring in a 10-0 on July 29.

In Canada’s win over Uruguay. Sara McManus of Delta, British Columbia scored twice. The other Canadian goal scorers were Rachel Donohoe, Holly Stewart and Stephanie Norlander of Vancouver, British Columbia. Norlander scored the game winning goal only in the fourth minute of action. Kaitlyn Williams of White Rock, British Columbia notched the shutout.

In an interesting format, all eight teams from the preliminary round advanced to the classification round which begins on Monday. By having a record of two wins and one loss, Canada finished in second place in Pool A behind Argentina. In Sunday’s quarterfinals, Canada will play Mexico, the United States plays Cuba, Chile plays Uruguay and Argentina plays Peru.

The semifinals take place on August 6 and the gold and bronze medal games take place on August 9. The gold medalist from the 2019 Pan American Games in women’s field hockey will qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

In men’s field hockey, Canada plays Peru on Saturday. They have won their first two games of the Pan American Games by beating Mexico 5-1 and the United States 4-0.
