Matthew Bergeron of Victoriaville, Quebec has become the richest Canadian in National Football League history. On August 1, Bergeron signed a four-year contract extension worth $96 million with the Atlanta Falcons, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. Bergeron will be making $24 million per year.
At the time of the signing, Bergeron tied Tyler Smith of the Dallas Cowboys as the highest paid offensive guard in National Football League history. They have since been passed by Peter Skoronski of the Tennessee Titans. On Friday, Skoronski signed a four-year contract worth $100 million according to the Sporting Base.
Bergeron has spent the last three seasons with the Falcons. He has played 49 games and has one fumble recovery. It came in a 26-24 Falcons win over the New Orleans Saints on September 29, 2024.
Initially, Bergeron was the Falcons’s second round pick, 38th overall, in the 2023 NFL Draft. He played his college football at the University of Syracuse.
The Falcons had a record of eight wins and nine losses last season. That was tied for the best record in the NFC South with the Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Despite ending the season on a four game-winning streak, the Falcons only finished in third place in the division as Carolina won the tiebreak.
