Canadian Olympic silver medalist Marco Arop of Edmonton, Alberta won the gold medal in the men’s 800 metres at Chorzow, Poland on Sunday. For Arop, he posted a time of 1:41.86. This was actually 0.66 seconds slower than his silver medal performance at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris earlier this month, but was more than enough to win the Diamond League gold.

Arop comfortably reached the podium in Poland by 1.62 seconds. Eliott Cretan of Belgium finished in fourth place with a time of 1:43.48. Emmanuel Wanyonyi of Kenya won the silver medal with a time of 1:43.23. Bryce Hoppel of the United States won the bronze medal with a time of 1:43.32. It was Wanyonyi who won the gold medal at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris with a time of 1:41.19, which was only one-hundredth of a second faster than Arop.

In the Diamond League standings, Arop finished fourth with 19 points. This was his second win of the season as he previously won in Xiamen, China on April 20. Arop was behind Diamond League champion Wyclife Kinyamal of Kenya (29 points), Djamel Sedjati of Algeria (24 points), and Wanyonyi (22 points).

Arop has now won four Diamond League events. His other two wins came in Lausanne, Switzerland on August 26, 2021 and in Birmingham, England on May 21, 2022. The gold medal in Chorzow will give Arop confidence as he prepares for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
