Sarah Mitton wins Diamond League women’s shot put bronze in Lausanne

Sarah Mitton of Liverpool, Nova Scotia won the bronze medal in a Diamond League event in Lausanne, Switzerland on Friday. For Mitton, it was her fourth Diamond League medal of the season.

Mitton posted a throw of 19.52 metres. Chase Jackson of the United States won the gold medal with a throw of 20.64 metres. Yemisi Ogunleye of Germany won the silver medal with a throw of 19.55 metres. Mitton reached the podium by 0.44 metres. Raven Saunders of the United States finished in fourth place with a throw of 19.08 metres.

Of Mitton’s four medals in Diamond League events in 2024, she has won two silver medals and two bronze medals. Mitton won silver medals in Suzhou, China on April 27 and Stockholm, Sweden on June 2. She also won a bronze medal in Marrakech, Morocco on May 19.

This was the final women’s Diamond League event of the 2024 season. Mitton finished in second place with 31 points. The Diamond League champion in women’s shot put this year is Jackson with 38 points.

Mitton is coming off a rather disappointing Olympic Games where she finished 12th. There were high expectations, but was unable to reach the final six when she went out of bounds. The bronze medal will give Mitton confidence as she prepares for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
