According to Luke Fox of Rogers Sportsnet on Friday, the Toronto Maple Leafs have named Craig Berube of Calahoo, Alberta as their new head coach. Berube takes over from Sheldon Keefe of Brampton, Ontario, who was fired on May 9.

Berube is joining his third National Hockey League franchise as head coach. He previously coached the Philadelphia Flyers from 2013 to 2015, and the St. Louis Blues from 2018 to 2024. In 543 regular season games as a head coach, Berube had a record of 281 wins, 190 regulation losses, and 72 losses in extra time for a winning percentage of .584.

In the postseason, Berube guided the St. Louis Blues to the 2019 Stanley Cup title. In seven games, the Blues beat the Boston Bruins for their only Stanley Cup title in franchise history.

As a player, Berube spent 17 seasons in the National Hockey League as a left winger from 1986 to 2003 with the Philadelphia Flyers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Calgary Flames, Washington Capitals, and New York Islanders. In 1054 games, he had 61 goals and 98 assists for 159 points. Berube was a -81 with 3149 penalty minutes, five power-play points, eight game winning goals, and 699 shots on goal.

Known as an enforcer, Berube had a career-high 305 penalty minutes with the Capitals in 1993-94. That was the fourth most penalty minutes in the NHL that season. Berube was behind Winnipeg Jets right winger Tie Domi of Windsor, Ontario (347), Dallas Stars right winger Shane Churla of Fernie, British Columbia (333), and Los Angeles Kings left winger Warren Rychel of Tecumseh, Ontario (322).
