The Toronto Maple Leafs stayed alive in the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs on Thursday. They defeated the Boston Bruins with a 2-1 win in game six of the Eastern Conference first round series.

The Maple Leafs were led by William Nylander of Calgary, Alberta. Nylander, who plays for Sweden internationally, opened the scoring with 55 seconds left in the first period. Defensemen Morgan Rielly of Vancouver, British Columbia and Timothy Liljegren picked up the assists. Nylander then scored again with two minutes and 13 seconds left in the third period to put the Maple Leafs up 2-0. Matthew Knies and Rielly had the assists on the Nylander insurance goal.

Toronto played very strong defensive hockey for the first half of the game. In the opening 27 minutes of the contest, the Bruins actually only had a single shot on goal.

The big story in Toronto at the moment is the health of Auston Matthews, who has not played since game four because of an illness. Matthews led the NHL this season with 69 goals.

Game seven takes place in Boston on Saturday with the best out of seven series tied at three. Two more series in the Western Conference take place on Friday. Vegas is playing Dallas with the Stars leading 3-2, and Vancouver is playing Nashville with the Canucks leading 3-2.
