Canadian Mackenzie Hughes of Hamilton, Ontario is a gigantic fan of the golf course at Saint Simons Island, Georgia. He was a winner there of the 2016 RSM Classic, and is now a contender for the 2024 RSM Classic.
On Saturday, Hughes got himself in contention after shooting a score of five-under-par 65. That followed a score of four-under-par 68 on the Plantation Course in the first round on Thursday, and a score of three-under-par 67 on the Seaside Course in the second round on Friday.
Hughes is currently at -12 and in a tie for third place, two strokes back of the lead. He is there alongside Americans Daniel Berger, Michael Thorbjornsen, and Patrick Fishburn. There is a two-way tie for the lead at -14. There you can find Americans Vince Whaley and Maverick McNealy. Then in seventh place, there is a two-way tie at -11. Amateur Luke Clanton of the United States and American Lee Hodges are at -11.
In round one, Hughes had seven birdies and three bogeys. He birdied the third, eighth, 10th, 13th, 14th, 16th, and 18th holes, and bogeyed the first, sixth, and 12th holes. In round two, Hughes had six birdies and three bogeys. He birdied the third, fourth, eighth, ninth, 12th, and 14th holes, and bogeyed the second, 10th, and 13th holes. Then in round three, Hughes had five birdies and zero bogeys. He birdied the 11th, 12th, 14th, 15th and 16th holes.
