According to 3downnation.com on Thursday, Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks quarterback Taylor Elgersma of London, Ontario has won the 2024 Hec Crighton Trophy. The award is presented annually to the most outstanding player in Canadian university football.
During the Ontario University Athletics regular season, Elgersma completed 178 passes in 239 attempts for 2643 passing yards. He had 20 passing touchdowns, compared to nine interceptions. Elgersma also had 34 rushes for 185 rushing yards and led the Golden Hawks with six rushing touchdowns.
Also in Ontario University Athletics play, Elgersma had a season high five touchdown passes on October 5 in a 51-21 Golden Hawks win over Queen’s University Golden Gaels. He then had a season high 464 passing yards on October 19 in a 44-24 Golden Hawks win over the Carleton University Ravens.
Overall, Elgersma led USport with 3554 passing yards, and 28 passing touchdowns. The Golden Hawks are also undefeated this season heading into the Vanier Cup Final where they are playing the University of Laval Rouge et Or at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario on Saturday.
This is the second time a player from the Golden Hawks has won the Hec Crighton Trophy. The first winner was quarterback Bill Kubas of Toronto, Ontario, who won the award in 1994.
The Golden Hawks have won two Vanier Cups in the past. They were victorious in 1991 and 2005.
