Mackenzie Blackwood of Thunder Bay, Ontario recorded his fourth career National Hockey League shutout on Thursday. Blackwood made 46 saves as the New Jersey Devils defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 5-0 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in what could be considered an upset.
Blackwood made nine saves in the first period, 17 saves in the second period and 20 saves in the third period. Scott Laughton of Oakville, Ontario and Travis Sanheim of Elkhorn, Manitoba led the Flyers in shots on goal with five shots on goal each.
Miles Wood led the Devils in scoring with two goals. Other Devils to score on Thursday were Damon Severson of Melville, Saskatchewan, Blake Coleman and Pavel Zacha. Interestingly, Blackwood picked up an assist on a second period power play goal by Severson, which put the Flyers up 2-0 at the time.
In 2019-20, Blackwood has a record of 16 wins, 12 regulation losses and seven losses in extra time. He has two shutouts, a goals against average of 2.92 and a save percentage of .908. Blackwood’s other shutout this season came in a 1-0 Devils win over the Vancouver Canucks on October 19.
It has been a tough season for the Devils. However, they definitely had one of their most complete wins of the season on Thursday evening.
