Lourdes Gurriel Jr. named American League Player of the Week

According to TSN on Tuesday, Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. of Sancti Spiritus, Cuba was named the American League player of the week from August 31 to September 6, 2020. In eight games, Gurriel Jr. batted .467 with two home runs and six runs batted in. He also had an impressive 1.282 on base plus slugging percentage, five runs scored, 14 hits in 30 at bats, and three walks.

Gurriel’s best game of the week came on Sunday in a 10-8 Blue Jays win over the Boston Red Sox. In that contest at Fenway Park, Gurriel Jr. had four hits (all singles). He also had his two home runs in Blue Jays wins. They came in a 2-1 win over the Miami Marlins on September 2, and in a 6-2 win over the Boston Red Sox on September 3.

Gurriel also played the entire week in left field. On the season, Gurriel Jr. is batting .301 in 146 at bats with six home runs and 23 runs batted in. During 161 plate appearances, he has scored 15 runs, and had 44 hits, 10 doubles, three stolen bases, 13 walks, a .354 on base percentage, .493 slugging percentage, and 72 total bases.

The Blue Jays are currently in second place in the American League East with a record of 24 wins and 19 losses. They are also three and a half games up on the Baltimore Orioles for a playoff spot.
