
Logan Stankoven of Kamloops, British Columbia recorded his first career National Hockey League hat trick on Thursday. He accomplished the feat in a dominant 7-2 Hurricanes win over the Vancouver Canucks at the Lenovo Center in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Stankoven had the Hurricanes’s three final goals of the game and registered a natural hat trick. He scored an even strength goal, power-play goal and shorthanded goal. Stankoven’s shorthanded goal was the first shorthanded goal and first shorthanded point of his NHL career. It came at 13:13 of the second period from defenseman Sean Walker of Kewsick, Ontario and Sebastian Aho to put the Hurricanes up 5-1. Stankoven then scored with 58 seconds left in the second period to put the Hurricanes up 6-1. This was all-Canadian goal as Taylor Hall of Calgary, Alberta and Walker had the assists. Stankoven’s hat trick came at 11:36 of the third period to put the Hurricanes up 7-1. Hall and Walker had the assists once again.
There were two Canadians who scored for the Hurricanes. Mark Jankowski of Hamilton, Ontario put the Hurricanes up 4-0 at 3:20 of the second period. Walker had a career-high four points (four assists) and Hall had two points (two assists).
In 2025-26, Stankoven has four goals for four points in five games. He is a +2 with two penalty minutes, one power-play point, one shorthanded point, 14 shots on goal, 17 faceoff wins, three blocked shots, three hits, one takeaway and four giveaways. The takeaway came in a 6-4 Hurricanes win over the Montreal Canadiens on October 6.
Stankoven is the third NHL player to record a hat trick this season. The other two players are Canadian. Oakville, Ontario native Evan Bouchard of the Edmonton Oilers, who had a hat trick on September 29 in a 6-5 Oilers loss to the Canucks, and St-Eustache, Quebec native Alexis Lafreniere of the New York Rangers, who had a hat trick on October 6 in a 5-2 Rangers win over the New York Islanders.
There have been five Canadians to score a shorthanded goal this season. The other four are Connor McDavid of Richmond Hill, Ontario (in a 9-7 Oilers win over the Canucks on October 1), Casey Cizikas of Toronto, Ontario (in a 6-0 New York Islanders win over the New Jersey Devils on October 3), and Mark Stone of Winnipeg, Manitoba (in a 6-2 Vegas Golden Knights win over the Seattle Kraken on October 6), and Dillon Dube of Golden, British Columbia (in a 3-2 St. Louis Blues loss to the San Jose Sharks on October 8).
With the win on Thursday, the Hurricanes improved to a record of three wins, one regulation loss and one loss in extra time for seven points. They are in second place in the Metropolitan Division, and one point back of the New York Rangers.
