Leylah Annie Fernandez of Montreal, Quebec has defended the Monterrey Open title she won last year. On Sunday, Fernandez, who was seeded second, defeated fifth-ranked Camilla Osorio of Colombia, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 in the final of the 2022 Monterrey Open in Mexico. After losing 7-5 in the first set tie breaker, Fernandez won 7-3 in the third set tie breaker.

We saw fantastic resilience from Fernandez on Sunday, much like what we saw at the 2021 United States Open, where Fernandez reached the women’s final before losing to Emma Raducanu of Great Britain. Osorio actually had five match points, but was unable to win the title. In the final, Fernandez won 69% of her points on her second serve. Osorio meanwhile only won 40%.

In addition to beating Osorio this week, Fernandez beat Anna Karolina Schmiedlova of Slovakia 6-2, 6-2 in round one, Qinwen Zheng of China 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 in round two, Qiang Wang of China 7-6, 6-4 in the quarterfinals, and Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil, 6-1, 6-4 in the semifinals. In 2021, Fernandez beat Viktorija Golubec of Switzerland in the final of the Monterrey Open, 6-1, 6-4. Interestingly, those are the only two WTA titles Fernandez has won on the WTA Tour so far. With the win, Fernandez remains at 21st in the world. Next up for Fernandez is Indian Wells, which begins this week.
