
Two more Canadian hockey players switched teams in the Professional Women’s Hockey League on Monday. They were Canadian Olympic gold medalist Erin Ambrose of Keswick, Ontario and Maddi Wheeler of Erinsville, Ontario. Ambrose, a defender, is going from the Montreal Victoire to Las Vegas, and Wheeler. a forward, is going from the New York Sirens to San Jose.
San Jose and Las Vegas are PWHL expansion franchises. Both Ambrose and Wheeler signed two year contracts. Ambrose won her gold medal in women’s hockey at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing. At the Olympics four years ago, she had nine points (four goals and five assists) in seven games.
Ambrose was part of the Montreal Victoire team that won the 2026 Walter Cup. Last season she had six assists. In 73 games over three seasons in Montreal, Ambrose had four goals and 33 assists for 37 points. She was a +24 with 10 penalty minutes, three faceoff wins, one power-play goal, two shootout goals, 110 blocked shots, and 114 shots. In her first PWHL season, Ambrose was the league’s defender of the year.
Wheeler was a rookie in the PWHL this past season with the New York Sirens. In 29 games, she had three goals and seven assists for 10 points. She was a +1 with 24 penalty minutes, nine faceoff wins, 18 blocked shots and 51 shots.
