Two-time Canadian Olympic silver medalist Kylie Masse of Windsor, Ontario won the silver medal in the women’s 100 metre backstroke at the 2022 World Aquatics Championship in Budapest, Hungary on Monday. This was Masse’s sixth career medal at the World Aquatics Championships.
Masse posted a second place time of 58.40 seconds. Regan Smith of the United States won the gold medal with a time of 58.22 seconds. Claire Curzan of the United States won the bronze medal with a time of 58.67 seconds. Masse reached the podium by 1.37 seconds over Wan Letian of China, who was in fourth place with a time of 59.77 seconds.
Masse won Canada’s third medal (all silver medals) at the World Aquatics Championships. Prior to Monday, Summer McIntosh of Toronto, Ontario won the silver medal in the women’s 400 metre freestyle with a time of 3:59.39. Then later on Sunday, Maggie Mac Neil of London, Ontario, Penny Oleksiak of Toronto, Ontario, Kayla Sanchez of Scarborough, Ontario and Taylor Ruck of Kelowna, British Columbia won silver in the women’s 4×100 metre freestyle relay.
Masse, who won the silver medal in the women’s 100 metre backstroke and the women’s 200 metre backstroke at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021, previously won gold in the women’s 100 metre backstroke at the last two World Aquatics Championships. Masse has also won bronze medals in the mixed 4×100 medley relay at the 2017 World Aquatics Championship in Budapest, and the women’s 200 metre backstroke and the women’s 4×100 metre medley relay at the 2019 World Aquatics Championships in Gwangju. The silver medal for Masse in Budapest on Monday will give her confidence as she prepares for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
