Kim Boutin wins gold in women’s 500 metres at Short Track Speed Skating World Cup in Japan

Canadian Olympic silver medalist Kim Boutin of Sherbrooke, Quebec won the gold medal on Sunday in the women’s 500 metre World Cup short track speed skating event in Nagoya, Japan. It was one of three medals Boutin won on the weekend as she also placed second in the women’s 1500 metre short track speed skating World Cup on Saturday and won silver in the women’s 3000 metre relay on Sunday. Team Canada won a fourth medal as Courtney Lee Sarault of Moncton, New Brunswick won silver in the women’s 1500 metre World Cup on Sunday.

In the women’s 500 metre World Cup on Sunday, Boutin had a winning time of 43.374 seconds. Arianna Fontana of Italy won the silver medal with a time of 43.528 seconds. Ji Yoo Kim of South Korea won the bronze medal with a time of 43.604 seconds. Boutin reached the podium by 0.424 seconds over Natalia Maliszewska of Poland, who had a fourth place time of 43.798 seconds.

In the women’s 1500 metre World Cup on Saturday, Boutin had a silver medal winning time of 2:30.663. Kim won the gold medal with a time of 2:30.432 and Fontana won the bronze medal with a time of 2:30.86. Boutin reached the podium by 0.793 seconds over Petra Jaszapati of Hungary, who had a fourth place time of 2:31.456.

In the women’s 1500 metre World Cup on Sunday, Sarault had a silver medal winning time of 2:30.976. Suzanne Schulting of the Netherlands won the gold medal with a time of 2:30.906. Yu Tong Han of China won the bronze medal with a time of 2:31.051. Sarault reached the podium by 3.28 seconds over Danae Blais of Chateauguay, Quebec. Blais had a fourth place time of 2:34.256.

In the women’s 3000 metre World Cup relay on Sunday, Blais, Boutin, Sarault and Alyson Charles of Montreal, Quebec had a second place time of 4:12.781. Italy won the gold medal with a time of 4:12.681 and Russia won the bronze medal with a time of 4:15.235.

In the women’s 500 metre World Cup standings, Boutin leads with 30000 points. She has 2784 more points than Martina Valcepina of Italy, who is in second place with 27216 points.

In the women’s 1500 metre World Cup standings, Boutin is in third place with 18000 points and Sarault is in seventh place with 10241 points. Kim leads with 20000 points.

In the women’s 3000 metre relay World Cup standings, Canada leads with 20800 points. They have 800 more points than China, which sits in second place with 20000 points.

Boutin won a silver medal for Canada in the women’s 1000 metres, as well as bronze medals in the women’s 500 metres and 1500 metres in short track speed skating at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang. She will be a strong medal contender for Canada at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing.
