Joshua Liendo wins bronze in the men’s 100m butterfly at 2022 World Aquatics Championship

Joshua Liendo of Markham, Ontario won his second individual medal of the 2022 World Aquatics Championship in Budapest, Hungary on Friday. Liendo, who previously won a bronze medal in the men’s 100 metre freestyle on Wednesday, placed third in the men’s 100 metre butterfly on Friday.

Liendo posted a third place time of 50.97 seconds. Kristof Milak of Hungary won the gold medal with a time of 50.14 seconds. Naoki Mizunuma of Japan won the silver medal with a time of 50.94 seconds. Liendo reached the podium by 0.14 seconds over Michael Andrew of the United States.

Liendo won a second medal on Friday in the mixed 4×100 metre freestyle relay. Unlike the mixed 4×100 metre medley relay, the mixed 4×100 metre freestyle relay does not have Olympic status.

In the mixed 4×100 metre freestyle relay, Team Canada won the silver medal with a time of 3:20.61. Australia won the gold medal with a time of 3:19.38 seconds in world record time. The United States won the bronze medal with a time of 3:21.09. Canada reached the podium by 1.83 seconds over Great Britain, who had a fourth place time of 3:22.44.

In addition to Liendo, the Canadian team in the final was comprised of Javier Acevedo and Kayla Sanchez of Scarborough, Ontario, along with Canadian Olympic gold medalist Penny Oleksiak of Toronto, Ontario. Oleklsiak won the gold medal in the women’s 100 metre freestyle at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
