Team Canada reaches round of 16 of the Women’s 3×3 Basketball Championship

Team Canada is in the round of 16 at the Women’s 3×3 Basketball Championship in Antwerp, Belgium. The Canadians will face Germany after splitting their games on Thursday in Pool D play to improve their overall record to three wins and one loss.

Canada opened Thursday with an 18-16 loss to Spain. However, Canada regrouped by beating the Netherlands 21-12. Michelle Plouffe of Edmonton, Alberta led Canada in scoring with 12 points. Katherine Plouffe of Edmonton, Alberta was second in scoring with five points. Paige Crozon of Humboldt, Saskatchewan had three points and Kacie Bosch of Lethbridge, Alberta had one point. Michelle Plouffe led Canada with two two-point shots, nine rebounds and three free throws. Michelle and Katherine Plouffe were tied for the Canadian lead in assists with two.

There will be three more round of 16 games. Belgium will play Brazil, France will play Mongolia and Lithuania will play the Netherlands.

The Canadians finished in second place in Pool D. They were only behind Spain. All four pool winners got a bye to the quarterfinals. The other three pool winners were the United States, China, and Poland. The Canada/Germany winner face the Americans. The Women’s 3×3 Basketball Championship were to have a team from the Dominican Republic, but the Dominicans withdrew before the tournament began.
