
Ilya Kharun of Montreal, Quebec won the bronze medal on Wednesday in the men’s 200 metre butterfly at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. For Kharun, it was his first Olympic medal and a Canadian national record, as he posted a third place time of 1:54.01. Kharun broke his own Canadian record in the men’s 200 metre butterfly. His previous Canadian record was 1:53.82 at the 2023 World Aquatics Championship in Fukuoka, Japan, an event Kharun finished fourth.
Kharun reached the podium by 1.1 seconds. Krzysztof Chmielewski of Poland finished in fourth place with a time of 1:53.90. Leon Marchand of France won the gold medal with an Olympic record time and French record time of 1:51.21. Kristof Milak of Hungary won the silver medal with a time of 1:51.75.
Marchand, meanwhile, is having a great Olympic Games while getting to compete in his home country of France. He has now won three Olympic gold medals in Paris. He was also first in the men’s 200 metre breaststroke and the men’s 400 metre medley.
This is Canada’s first ever Olympic medalist in the men’s 200 metre butterfly. Interestingly, Canadian women have never medaled in the women’s 200 metre butterfly either. At the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, Canada has now won seven medals (two gold medals, two silver medals, and three bronze medals).
