The 2022 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Men’s Hockey Championship in Edmonton and Red Deer has been cancelled according to according to Matthew Black of CTV News. At least they are for now. On late Wednesday evening, there were reports that efforts were being made to continue with the 2022 IIHF World Junior Men’s Hockey Championship sometime in the summer.

The reason for the cancellation is coronavirus. There were four positive tests among the American, Russian and Czech teams over the last 48 hours. As a result, those teams were forced to forfeit their games. The policy has since been criticized by Finnish hockey, which questioned why were the entire teams that had an infected player all quarantined, and not just the players infected.

The 2022 IIHF World Junior Men’s Hockey Championship was a strong one for Team Canada. They won their first two games—6-3 over the Czech Republic on Sunday, and then 11-2 over Austria on Tuesday. The Canadian team received some fine performances from defenseman Owen Power of Mississauga, Ontario, and forward Connor Bedard of North Vancouver, British Columbia.

Coronavirus continues to be a program in Canada. There are 230,962 active cases of coronavirus in Canada, with 17 new deaths over the last 24 hours.
