The second day of the 2024 National Hockey League Entry Draft took place on Saturday in Las Vegas. Here are four Canadians who were traded.
Beck Malentsyn
The Washington Capitals traded Beck Malentsyn of Delta, British Columbia to the Buffalo Sabres for a second round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft. A left winger, Malenstyn had six goals and 15 assists for 21 points in 81 games. He was a -1 with 25 penalty minutes, one game-winning goal, one shorthanded point, 98 shots on goal, 23 faceoff wins, 93 blocked shots, 241 hits, 30 takeaways, and 20 giveaways.
Malentsyn’s game-winning goal came on February 26 in a 6-3 Capitals win over the Ottawa Senators. Malentsyn scored from Aliaksei Protas and Nicolas Aube-Kubel of Slave Lake, Alberta at 18:47 of the first period. At the time, the Capitals went up 4-2.
Malentsyn’s shorthanded point was a shorthanded assist on a goal by Tom Wilson of Toronto, Ontario in a 6-0 Capitals win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on March 7. Wilson’s goal was the game-winning goal at 1:51 of the first period.
Logan Thompson
The Vegas Golden Knights traded goaltender Logan Thompson of Calgary, Alberta to the Washington Capitals for a third round pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft and 2025 NHL Entry Draft. In 46 games, Thompson had a record of 25 wins, 14 regulation losses and five losses in extra time with one shutout. Thompson had a goals against average of 2.70 and a save percentage of .908. Thompson’s shutout came in a 4-0 Golden Knights win over the San Jose Sharks on February 19.
Tanner Jeannot
Jeannot of Estevan, Saskatchewan was traded from the Tampa Bay Lightning to the Los Angeles Kings for a fourth round pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft and a second round draft pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft. The Kings are Jeannot’s third NHL team after three seasons with the Nashville Predators and two seasons with the Lightning.
In 2023-24, Jeannot had seven goals and seven assists for 14 points in 55 games. He was a -10 with 75 penalty minutes, two power-play points, 59 shots on goal, 23 faceoff wins, 27 blocked shots, 211 hits, six takeaways, and 15 giveaways.
Chris Tanev
Tanev of Toronto, Ontario was traded from the Dallas Stars to the Toronto Maple Leafs for forward prospect Max Ellis of Plymouth, Michigan and a seventh round draft pick in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft. The Maple Leafs are Tanev’s fourth NHL team following a decade with the Vancouver Canucks, four seasons with the Calgary Flames and one season with the Stars.
Tanev had two goals and 17 assists for 19 points in 75 games. He was a +22 with 24 penalty minutes, 56 shots on goal, 207 blocked shots, 45 hits, 25 takeaways, and 38 giveaways.
Tanev had one goal for the Flames and one for the Stars this past season. Tanev scored from Andrew Mangiapane of Toronto and Dennis Gilbert on November 3o in a 4-3 Flames win over the Stars. The goal came at 8:02 of the first period and tied the game at one. Tanev’s goal for the Stars came on March 8 in a 6-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks. Tanev scored from Roope Hintz and Esa Lindell at 1:14 of the first period to open the scoring.
