Former NHL centre Forbes Kennedy passes away at age 90

Former National Hockey League centre Forbes Kennedy of Dorchester, New Brunswick passed away at the age of 90 on Monday according to Stephen Brun of CBC Sports. Kennedy spent 11 seasons in the National Hockey League from 1956 to 1969.

Kennedy played for five NHL franchises. He was with the Chicago Black Hawks as a rookie in 1956-57. Kennedy then played four seasons with the Detroit Red Wings from 1957 to 1962, four seasons with the Boston Bruins from 1962 to 1966, two seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers from 1967 to 1969, and one season with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1969.

In 603 regular season games, Kennedy had 70 goals and 108 assists for 178 points. He had 888 penalty minutes, 11 power-play points, 13 shorthanded points and eight game-winning goals.

During the National Hockey League postseason, Kennedy played 12 games. He had two goals and four assists for six points, with 64 penalty minutes, two power-play points and one shorthanded point. The shorthanded postseason point came on April 13, 1968 in a 6-1 Philadelphia Flyers win over the St. Louis Blues. Kennedy scored from Claude Laforge of Sorel, Quebec and defenseman John Miszuk at 15:52 of the first period which put the Flyers up 3-0 at the time. The goal came in game five of the NHL quarterfinals.

Despite being born in New Brunswick, Kennedy was raised in Prince Edward Island. He was inducted into the Prince Edward Island Sports Hall of Fame in 1968.
