The Philadelphia Flyers named Mike Yeo of Toronto, Ontario their new head coach on Monday according to the Athletic. Yeo takes over Alain Vigneault of Quebec City, Quebec, after the Flyers had an eight game losing streak.Yeo had been an assistant coach with the Flyers since 2019.

This will be the third head coaching job for Yeo. He was previously with the Minnesota Wild from 2011 to 2016, and then with the St. Louis Blues from 2016 to 2019.

Three times in Yeo’s coaching career he has won a playoff series. While with the Wild, Minnesota upset the Colorado Avalanche in seven games in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs in 2014. Then the following year in 2015, the Wild beat the St. Louis Blues in six games in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs. While with the Blues in 2017, Yeo led St. Louis to a four games to one series win over the Wild before losing in the second round to the Nashville Predators.

The Flyers are currently in seventh place in the Metropolitan Division with 20 points. They have a record of eight wins, 11 regulation losses, and four losses in extra time. On Monday, the Flyers lost 7-5 to the Colorado Avalanche in Yeo’s first game as the Flyers head coach. Keeping the puck out of the net has been a problem for Philadelphia lately. They have given up 44 goals in their last nine games.

Remarkably, the Flyers do not have the longest losing streak in the NHL. That streak belongs to the New York Islanders, who have lost 11 straight games.
