Five Canadians at the 2025 Australian Open

There are five Canadians who have qualified for the two singles draws for the 2025 Australian Open which commences Sunday in Melbourne (Saturday evening in Canada). They are Felix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal, Quebec, Gabriel Diallo of Montreal and Denis Shapovalov of Toronto, Ontario on the men’s side, and Leylah Annie Fernandez of Montreal and Rebecca Marino of Toronto on the women’s side. Two Canadians are seeded. Auger-Aliassime is seeded 29th, and Fernandez is seeded 30th.

In round one, Auger-Aliassime, the 2021 United States Open semifinalist, will play Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany. They have won two matches head-to-head with Auger-Aliassime’s wins coming in the first round of Rotterdam in 2020 (6-3, 1-6, 6-3) and the first round of the Paris Indoor in 2023 (7-6, 6-4). Shapovalov, the 2021 Wimbledon semifinalist, will face Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain, who reached the semifinals of Wimbledon in 2019. Shapovalov has beaten Bautista Agut three times before with the wins coming in the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2021 (6-1, 6-3, 7-5), the first round of Washington in 2024 (6-1, 6-4), and the second round of the Swiss Indoors in 2024 (6-3, 7-6).

Diallo, Fernandez and Marino have never beaten their opponent before. Diallo is facing Luca Nardi of Italy. Fernandez, the 2021 United States Open finalist, is facing Yuliia Starodubtseva of Ukraine, and Marino is facing the 22nd seed, Katie Boulter of Great Britain.
