Felix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal, Quebec won the 2022 Lionel Conacher Award on Thursday according to Alexandre Geoffrion-McInnis of the Canadian Press on Thursday. The award is presented to the best Canadian male athlete of the year. Auger-Aliassime becomes the third Canadian tennis player all-time to win the award. Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ontario received the honour in 2013 and 2014, and Denis Shapovalov of Toronto, Ontario received the honour in 2017.
Auger-Aliassime won four ATP tournaments, the ATP Cup and the Davis Cup. Auger-Aliassime’s ATP titles came at the Rotterdam Open in the Netherlands, where he beat Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece in the final, 6-4, 6-2, the Firenze Open in Florence, Italy, where he beat J.J. Wolf of the United States in the final, 6-4, 6-4, the European Open in Antwerp, Belgium, where he beat Sebastian Korda of the United States in the final, 6-3, 6-4, and the 2022 Swiss Indoors in Basel where he beat Holger Rune of Denmark in the final, 6-3, 7-5.
Auger-Aliassime also led Canada to an ATP Cup title in Sydney. He teamed up with Shapovalov to beat Great Britain, Germany, Russia, and Spain in the elite world men’s tennis team competition. At the 2022 Davis Cup in Malaga, Spain, Auger-Aliassime, Shapovalov and Vasek Pospisil of Vernon, British Columbia teamed up to beat Germany, Italy, and Australia in the knockout round of the ATP Finals.
