According to nhl.com on Friday, the Vancouver Canucks acquired defenseman Ethan Bear of Regina, Saskatchewan and center Lane Pederson of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan from the Carolina Hurricanes for a fifth round draft pick in the National Hockey League Entry Draft. For Bear, the Canucks will be his third NHL team as he previously played for the Edmonton Oilers and Hurricanes.

Pederson never played a game for Carolina. He previously played for the Arizona Coyotes and San Jose Sharks. In the offseason, he was traded from the Sharks to the Hurricanes in the Brent Burns deal.

In 2021-22, Bear played 58 games for the Hurricanes. He had five goals and nine assists for 14 points. Bear was also a +1 with 20 penalty minutes, two game-winning goals, one power-play point, 97 shots on goal, 41 blocked shots, 55 hits, 16 takeaways, and 28 giveaways. Bear’s game-winning goals came in a 7-4 Hurricanes win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on January 1, 2022, and in a 2-0 win over the Colorado Avalanche on March 10, 2022. Bear’s power-play point was a power-play assist on a goal from Martin Necas in a 3-2 Hurricanes win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on March 22, 2022.

The trade with the Hurricanes was one of two trades the Canucks made this week. On Thursday they traded goaltender Michael DiPietro and defenseman Jonathan Myrenberg to the Boston Bruins for center Jack Studnicka.
