The Edmonton Eskimos  signed wide receiver Armanti Edwards from the Toronto Argonauts according to the Canadian Football League website on Friday. Edwards joins his third Canadian Football League franchise as he has previously played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Argonauts.

Last season with Toronto, the native of Greenwood, South Carolina had 69 catches. He also set career highs in receiving yards (1014) and touchdown catches (seven).

Edwards had great success in games for the Argonauts against the Ottawa Redblacks in the month of October last season. On October 11, 2019, Edwards had five catches for 54 yards and two touchdowns as the Argonauts beat the Redblacks 28-21. It was the first time in Edwards’s career that he had two touchdowns in a single game. Then on October 26, Edwards had six catches for 126 yards and one touchdown in a 39-9 Argonauts win over the Redblacks.

In Edwards’s four year CFL career which began in 2016, he has 244 catches for 3181 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also won a Grey Cup with the Argonauts in 2017.

Edwards played college football at Appalachian State in North Carolina from 2006 to 2009. He was then drafted by the Carolina Panthers in the third round, 89th overall, in the 2010 National Football League Draft. Edwards played four NFL seasons with the Panthers and Cleveland Browns from 2010 to 2013. He had six catches for 131 yards.

One reason why Edwards was expendable is because the Argonauts signed wide receiver Juwan Brescacin of Mississauga, Ontario from the Calgary Stampeders on February 11. Brescacin had 69 catches for 1046 yards and six touchdowns with Calgary over the last four seasons from 2016 to 2019.

The Canadian Football League has also postponed the start of the season because of coronavirus. The earliest the season will start is July 1. However the Montreal Alouettes will need to find an alternative place to play if the CFL does play in July or August. That is because on Friday the province of Quebec cancelled all sporting events in the province until August 31. The Rogers Cup women’s tennis tournament scheduled for Montreal in August has now been cancelled and the Canadian Grand Prix Formula One race scheduled for Montreal in June has now been postponed.
