Eliot Grondin wins World Cup snowboarding gold in Switzerland

Canadian Olympic silver medalist Eliot Grondin of Sainte-Marie, Quebec won the final World Cup men’s snowboardcross event of the season on Sunday. Grondin placed first art a World Cup event in Veysonnaz, Switzerland.

Grondin, who won the silver medal in the men’s snowboardcross event and the bronze medal in the mixed team snowboardcross event as well with Meryeta O’Dine of Prince George, British Columbia, at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing, won all four of his heats on Sunday from Veysonnaz. In the men’s big final in Veysonnaz, Grondin was joined in the final by three Frenchmen. Merlin Surget won the silver medal, and Leo le Ble Jaques won the bronze medal.

This was Grondin’s second World Cup gold medal of his career. The first came on March 4, 2021 in Bakuriani, Georgia.

It was also Grondin’s sixth World Cup medal. He also previously won silver in Big White, British Columbia on January 25, 2020, silver in Chiesa in Valmalenco, Italy on January 23, 2021, silver in Cervinia, Italy on December 28, 2021, and bronze in Krasnoyarsk, Russia on January 9, 2022.

Grondin finished fourth in the men’s World Cup standings with 347 points. The World Cup men’s snowboardcross champion was Martin Noerl of Germany with 460 points. The gold medal for Grondin will give him confidence as he prepares for the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milan/Cortina d’Ampezzo.
