Eleven Canadian MLB players in 2022 MLB postseason

The 2022 Major League Baseball playoffs begin on Friday with four wildcard games. Of the 12 MLB teams that have qualified for the postseason are 11 Canadians. Let’s take a look who they are.

Matt Brash–Seattle Mariners 

The native of Kingston, Ontario will be in the Mariners bullpen when Seattle plays Toronto. A rookie who started the season as a starter, Brash was later moved to a relief role. In 39 games, Brash had a record of four wins and four losses with an earned run average of 4.44. In 50 2/3 innings, he gave up 46 hits, 25 earned runs and 33 walks, to go along with 62 strikeouts and a WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) of 1.56.

Freddie Freeman–Los Angeles Dodgers

Even though Freeman was born in the United States, he represents Canada internationally, as his parents were from Ontario. A first baseman with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Freeman batted .325 with 21 home runs and 100 runs batted in during 2022. He also led the National League in runs (117) and on base percentage (.407), and the Major Leagues in hits (199), and doubles (47). Freeman also had two triples, 84 walks, a slugging percentage of .511, 313 total bases, and seven sacrifice flies. The Dodgers are the number one seed in the National League and get a first round playoff bye.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr.–Toronto Blue Jays

The native of Montreal, Quebec batted .274 with 32 home runs and 97 runs batted in. Like Freeman, Guerrero plays first base. In 2022, Guerrero Jr. also scored 90 runs and had 175 hits, 35 doubles, eight stolen bases, 58 walks, 306 total bases, four sacrifice flies, an on base percentage of .339, and a slugging percentage of .480.

Josh Naylor–Cleveland Guardians 

The native of Mississauga, Ontario batted .256 with 20 home runs and 79 runs batted in. An outfielder, Naylor will be an integral part of the Guardians batting order when they host the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League wildcard. In 122 games, he scored 47 runs and had 115 hits, 28 doubles, six stolen bases, 38 walks, 203 total bases, five sacrifice flies, an on base percentage of .319, and a slugging percentage of .452.

Bo Naylor–Cleveland Guardians 

The native of Mississauga, Ontario did not get a hit in eight at bats for the Guardians in 2022. The catcher is the younger brother of Josh Naylor.

Tyler O’Neill–St. Louis Cardinals

The native of Maple Ridge, British Columbia is on the injury list at this time with a hamstring ailment. In 2022, the outfielder batted .228 with 14 home runs and 58 runs batted in.

Zach Pop–Toronto Blue Jays

The native of Brampton, Ontario shared his 2022 MLB regular season with the Blue Jays and Miami Marlins. In 35 games, Pop had a record of four wins and zero losses with an earned run average of 2.77. In 39 innings pitched, he gave up 41 hits, 12 earned runs, and four walks. He had 25 strikeouts and a WHIP of 1.15.

Cal Quantrill–Cleveland Guardians

The native of Port Hope, Ontario was sensational in 2022, as he had a record of 15 wins and five losses with an earned run average of 3.38 on the mound as a starting pitcher. In 186 1/3 innings pitched, Quantrill gave up 178 hits, 70 earned runs and 47 walks, to go along with 128 strikeouts and a WHIP of 1.21.

Jordan Romano–Toronto Blue Jays 

The native of Markham, Ontario was an All-Star for the first time in 2022. A closer in the Blue Jays bullpen, Romano had a record of five wins and four losses with an earned run average of 2.11 in 63 games in 2022. In 64 innings, Romano had 36 saves and 73 strikeouts, and gave up 44 hits, 15 earned runs, and 21 walks, to go along with a WHIP of 1.02.

Jameson Taillon–New York Yankees

Like Freeman, Taillon is Canadian because his parents were born in Canada. A starting pitcher for the New York Yankees, Taillon had a record of 14 wins and five losses with an earned run average of 3.91 this past season. During 177 1/3 innings pitched, he gave up 168 hits, 77 earned runs, and 32 walks to go along with 151 strikeouts and a WHIP of 1.13. Also like Freeman, Taillon gets a first round bye.

Abraham Toro–Seattle Mariners

The native of Longueuil, Quebec is an infielder for the Mariners, and plays second base and third base. He batted .185 with 10 home runs and 35 runs batted in for Seattle in 2022. In 324 games, Toro scored 36 runs and had 60 hits, 13 doubles, one triple, two stolen bases, 22 walks, 105 total bases, four sacrifice flies, an on base percentage of .239 and a slugging percentage of .324.
