According to Rogers Sportsnet on Monday, the New Jersey Devils have named Travis Green of Castlegar, British Columbia as their new head coach. Green takes over from Lindy Ruff of Warburg, Alberta.

This is Green’s second National Hockey League coaching job. He previously coached the Vancouver Canucks from 2017 to 2021. In five seasons, Green had a record of 133 wins and 147 regulation losses with 34 losses in extra time, and a winning percentage of .478.

Green also led the Canucks to a successful run during the 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs in the Edmonton bubble. Green guided the Canucks to a three games to one win over the Minnesota Wild in the qualifying round, and then a four games to two win over the St. Louis Blues in the Western Conference quarterfinals before losing a dramatic seven game series to the Vegas Golden Knights in the Western Conference semifinals.

The Devils are sixth in the Metropolitan Division with 64 points. That is only one season after they were second in the Metropolitan Division with 112 points.

Green also played 14 seasons in the NHL as a centre from 1992 to 2007. He was with the New York Islanders from 1992 to 1998, the Anaheim Ducks from 1998 to 1999, and again from 2006 to 2007, the Phoenix Coyotes from 1999 to 2001, the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2001 to 2003, and in 2007, and the Boston Bruins from 2003 to 2006. He was a -55 with 764 penalty minutes, 117 power-play points, eight shorthanded points, 21 game-winning goals, and 1726 shots on goal.
