Sarah Mitton of Liverpool, Nova Scotia won the gold medal at the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow, Scotland on Friday. Mitton was the only Canadian to win a medal at the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships, and it happened to be gold.

Mitton had a winning throw of 20.22 metres. Yemsi Ogunleye of Germany won the silver medal with a throw of 20.19 metres. Chase Jackson of the United States won the bronze medal with a throw of 19.67 metres. Mitton reached the podium by 0.6 metres over Madison-Lee Wesche of New Zealand, who was in fourth place with a throw of 19.62 metres.

Mitton’s throw of 20.22 metres was in fact a Canadian National Indoor record. She actually had the two furthest women’s shot put throws in Canadian history at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow. Mitton initially set the Canadian record of 20.2 metres with her fourth throw. Mitton’s gold medal winning throw of 20.22 metres was her sixth throw in Glasgow.

Mitton also had the previous Canadian National Indoor record of 20.08 metres. She accomplished the feat at the World Athletics Indoor Tour event in Czech Republic on February 20. The gold medal in Glasgow will give Mitton confidence as she prepares for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
