Devils defenseman P.K. Subban wins 2022 King Clancy Trophy

According to Rogers Sportsnet on Tuesday, New Jersey Devils defenseman and Canadian Olympic gold medalist P.K. Subban of Toronto, Ontario won the 2022 King Clancy Trophy. The award is presented to the player who exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice, and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution to his community.

Subban’s most significant contribution was a $10 million donation to the Montreal Children’s Hospital in 2015. This past year, he donated funds to Ukrainian cancer patients who were displaced because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Subban also teamed up with former National Hockey League player Georges Laraque of Montreal, Quebec in 2011 to donate $1.3 million to build a temporary hospital in Haiti after a hospital in Haiti was destroyed due to a horrific earthquake.

On the ice, Subban, who won a gold medal for Canada at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, had five goals and 17 assists for 22 points in 77 games with the Devils in 2021-22. He was a -8 with 82 penalty minutes, one game-winning goal, one shorthanded point, 114 shots on goal, 90 blocked shots, 69 hits, 23 takeaways, and 51 giveaways. Subban’s game-winning goal came on November 9 from Dawson Mercer of Carbonear, Newfoundland and Joas Siegenthaler in a 7-3 Devils win over the Florida Panthers. Subban’s shorthanded point came two nights later on November 11 with an assist on a goal by Janne Kuokkanen in a 4-0 Devils win over the New York Islanders.
