Denis Shapovalov and Milos Raonic reach the quarterfinals of the 2020 St. Petersburg Open

Denis Shapovalov of Toronto, Ontario, and Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ontario have each reached the quarterfinals of the 2020 St. Petersburg Open in Russia. This is Raonic’s fourth time this season he has reached the final eight, and the fifth time this season for Shapovalov.

In the tournament in Russia to date, Raonic, the sixth seed, defeated American qualifier J.J. Wolf 7-6, 6-1 in the first round and Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan 6-3, 6-2 in the second round. Shapovalov, the second seed, defeated Viktor Troicki of Serbia 6-2, 6-3 in the first round, and then Belarussian Ilya Ivashka 6-1, 6-4 in the second round.

In the quarterfinals, Raonic will be up against the fourth seed, Russian Karen Khachanov. This will be their first head to head meeting.

Shapovalov meanwhile will be up against three-time grand slam champion Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland. Wawrinka, the fifth seed, has won the 2014 Australian Open, 2015 French Open and 2016 United States Open in his career. The other two quarterfinal matches have Andrey Rublev of Russia up against Cameron Norrie of Great Britain, and Borna Coric of Croatia against Reilly Opelka of the United States.

Raonic has won the St. Petersburg Open in the past. He won the 2015 title when he defeated Joao Sousa of Portugal 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the final. However at the time, the St. Petersburg Open was part of the ATP 250 Series. In 2020, it has been upgraded to the ATP 500 Series.
