Dave Dickenson had his role with the Calgary Stampeders increase on Monday. According to the Canadian Press, Dickenson will now be the Stampeders general manager as well as the head coach. John Hufnagel, the former Stampeders general manager, will remain with the Stampeders as their team president and consultant. Calgary also named Brendan Mahoney as their new assistant general manager. Mahoney was previously the Stampeders Director of Player Personnel.

The Stampeders are coming off a season where they had a record of 12 wins and six losses. They were tied with the British Columbia Lions as having the second best record in the Canadian Football League, only behind the Grey Cup finalist Winnipeg Blue Bombers, which had a record of 15 wins and three losses. Even though Calgary had the second best record in the CFL regular season in 2022, they did not host a playoff game at McMahon Stadium, as the Lions held the tie-breaker over the Stampeders as British Columbia won three of four meetings head-to-head.

Dickenson is one of four head coaches in the Canadian Football League who are also the team’s general manager. Others are Danny Maciocia of Montreal, Quebec (the Montreal Alouettes), Chris Jones of the Edmonton Elks and Rick Campbell of the British Columbia Lions.

Dickenson played five seasons for the Stampeders as quarterback from 1997 to 2000 and again in 2008. He was then an assistant coach for Calgary from 2009 to 2015, before becoming the head coach in 2016.
