Courtney Lee Sarault of Moncton, New Brunswick won two bronze medals on Sunday at the 2023 World Short Track Speed Skating Championships in Seoul, South Korea. She placed third in the women’s 1000 metres and then teamed up with Canadian Olympic silver medalist Kim Boutin of Sherbrooke, Quebec, Claudia Gagnon of La Baie, Quebec, and Renee Marie Steenge of Etobicoke, Ontario to win bronze in the women’s 3000 metre relay. Team Canada won a third medal on Sunday as Steven Dubois of Laval, Quebec won bronze in the men’s 1000 metres. Boutin won the silver medal in the women’s 1000 metres at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang. Dubois won gold in the men’s 5000 metre relay at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing.
In the women’s 1000 metres, Sarault had a time of 1:29.794. Xandra Velzeboer of the Netherlands won the gold medal with a time of 1:29.361. Minjeong Choi of South Korea won the silver medal with a time of 1:29.679. Sarault earned a medal by 4.307 seconds over Gagnon, who had a time of 1:34.101.
In the women’s 3000 metre relay, Canada had a time of 4:09.372. The Netherlands won the gold medal with a time of 4:09.056. South Korea won the silver medal with a time of 4:09.151. Canada reached the podium by 0.57 seconds over Italy, which had a fourth place time of 4:09.942.
In the men’s 1000 metres, Dubois had a time of 1:28.069. Ji Won Park of South Korea won the gold medal with a time of 1:27.741. Stijn Desmet of Belgium won the silver medal with a time of 1:27.974. Dubois reached the podium by two one-thousandths of a second over Kyung Hwan Hong of South Korea, who had a time of 1:28.071. The medals for Dubois, Boutin, Gagnon, Steenge and Sarault will give them confidence as they prepare for the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milan/Cortina d’Ampezzo.
