The Concordia University Stingers have won the 2022 Canadian University Women’s Hockey Championship. On Sunday, the Stingers defeated the Nipissing University Lakers 4-0 in the gold medal game from the MacLauchlan Arena in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. It was their third championship in school history following wins in 1998 and 1999.

In the 2022 USports Women’s Ice Hockey Championship, the Stingers played remarkable defense throughout the entire tournament. In the three games, they did not give up a single goal. The Stingers also beat the home squad, the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers 7-0 in the quarterfinals, and the Saskatchewan Huskies 2-0 in the semifinals.

In the gold medal game, Stephanie Lalancette of Saint-Felicien, Quebec led Concordia with two goals, as both goals were unassisted markers. The other Canadian goal scorers were Maria Manarolis of Laval, Quebec, and Audrey Belzile of St-Hyacinthe, Quebec. Manarolis scored the game-winning goal on the power-play at 18:21 of the second period.

In a bit of a surprise decision it was Lalancette who was the tournament’s most valuable player with three goals and two assists for five points in three games. Lalancette was chosen over goaltender Alice Philbert of St-Bruno-de-Montarville, Quebec. The bottom line is that Philbert could not have been any better in the tournament as she gave up zero goals in 59 shot attempts over 180 minutes of action.
