Canada qualifies for the 2022 FIFA World Cup

Team Canada has qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. In a gigantic day in Canadian men’s soccer history, this is only the second time ever that Canada has qualified for the World Cup in men’s soccer. The first time came in 1986, at the World Cup in Mexico, where Canada failed to score a goal, as they were blanked by a total score of 5-0 in three games by France, the Soviet Union, and Hungary.

The Canadian team that qualified on Sunday following a 4-0 win over Jamaica at BMO Field in Toronto, Ontario, is entering the World group of 32 with significant momentum. Canada is in first place in CONCACAF at the moment with 28 points. They have one more game left to play, and that will be a battle against Panama in Panama City on Wednesday.

In Canada’s win over Jamaica on Sunday, the Canadian goal scorers were all from Brampton, Ontario. Cyle Larin scored in the 13th minute, Tajon Buchanan scored in the 44th minute, and Junior Hoilett scored in the 83rd minute. The fourth Canadian goal was an own goal by Jamaica.

Canada becomes the 20th team to qualify for the 2022 World Cup. They are joined by Qatar, Germany, Denmark, Brazil, France, Belgium, Croatia, Spain, Serbia, England, Switzerland, Netherlands, Argentina, Iran, South Korea, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Ecuador, and Uruguay.
